Google furthers its grip on education with LMS - Classroom

Well, if you thought Google was just dipping its feet in to test the education water a couple of years ago, you could have been forgiven for your naivety at the time. Google Inc. is debuting is first entry into the LMS world after successfully revolutionising cloud based student and staff file management at the coal face. They have kept their cards close to their chest so far, with a select few being able to play with the beta technology before it becomes mainstream in September. From what can be seen on their info page, Classroom will allow:

  • Sending of duplicated googledocs to multiple students.
  • Seamless integration of a markbook with feedback directed in through their current docs suite.
  • A more efficient classroom communication feature than current GAFE schools have through use of Gmail alone.
  • Automatic creation of folders for assignments when sending to students.
It sounds like Edmodo meets full Googledoc integration though it is yet to be seen whether roll marking and other important administrative features will be integrated into Classroom. I know from experience as both a user, integrator and coordinator of eLearning that teachers want a system for all. Could this be it? I will certainly be trialling the system until December with the ICT Committee at my college and will post our wrap up from the first 3 months use.

Click here for a possible early sign up and then "request invite" in the top right corner, though I wouldn't hold my breath. It seems not many have been lucky enough to have an advance screening opportunity and you may have to wait along with the rest of the masses.
